Tourism

Winchelsea is a town renown for its local walks. Visitors can take walks along the 1066 Country Walk, the Saxon Shore Way, the Royal Military Canal Path and the more sedate Circular Winchelsea Walk. It is also a centre for bird watchers.
Attractions

Pett Level – Small lakes known as “Pett Pools,” features wildlife of many kinds.
Pannel Valley Nature Reserve – A haven for naturalists and bird-watchers.
Transport

Road – The A259 South Coast Trunk Road passes through the town.
Rail – The town does have its own railway station, albeit ½ mile outside its boundary.
Brief History

Winchelsea was founded by the Saxons in around 800AD as a fishing village. In the 13th century the town had grown to a population of about 5000 people before it was destroyed by great storms and a massive flood. The population moved inland and the new town was built at its present location. Along with nearby Rye, Winchelsea was made a limb of the Cinque Ports
