From the mid-18th century East Grinstead became a stagecoach town. Many stagecoaches passed through on their way to and from the growing resort of Brighton. The railway arrived in 1855 and made it possible for middle class commuters to live in East Grinstead and so, in the late 19th century, the population of the town grew rapidly.
