Brief History

The earliest traces of human habitation in this part of the Weald go back to the Neolithic (New Stone Age) people who came over from the continent sometime before 3000BC. Some of their implements and those of the later Bronze Age (2000-5000BC) have been found in Waldron. Ironworking was carried out over 2000 years ago. The Romans, who arrived in AD43, greatly expanded its production and remains of iron-works, as well as Roman pottery have been found in both parishes. The Saxons arrived in Heathfield in the 5th century AD and settled in the area.
