Brief History

Stone Age relics have been found on the South Downs at Truleigh Hill just north of the town. A Bronze Age settlement had been established between 1800BC and 1100BC near to where Stoney Lane is now. The Belgae, a Celtic tribe, occupied the area around 44AD. Roman coins and other Romano-British artefacts have been found in the area which suggest that this was a thriving centre of commerce. The Saxons built on the existing site following their invasion in about 457AD.
